This is a personal & professional post for me. There’s the part of this story that involves me taking family and maternity photos for this awesome couple and their incredible son. There’s the glass of wine that Tim drank to help get him through another photo session while, admittedly, not really loving having his pictures taken (I’m with you, Tim!). There’s the hilarious impossibility of getting a two-year-old to be still and not wreak havoc on his momma’s hair or dad’s glasses. There’s the little girl, arriving in September, that will be so loved and adored and doted on. There’s the stormy clouds. The bug bites. The moment of beautiful light as the sun peaked out at the end of our maternity session.
But what these photos are, to me, are photos of my beautiful, brave sister-in-law, her strong and stable husband, and their exceptional, extraordinary son. Two and a half years ago, Lacey & Tim welcomed their son into this world and were shocked and overwhelmed when the doctors diagnosed him with Down syndrome. It has been an emotionally and physically difficult road at times, but I cannot begin to describe the poise and grace and strength and perseverance they have shown. I am in awe of this family and the laughter and love they share, all while facing challenges and stereotypes and hurdles.
So, taking these family & maternity photographs was a way to hopefully honor them and show them a little of what the world sees: happiness, connectedness, tenderness, and beauty. It was also a chance to capture Lacey’s excitement for the little girl on the way – ruffles and pink and bows and painted nails and more cuteness to come!! Eeeeee!!
I encourage you to get to know the Down syndrome community, get involved in their efforts to heighten understanding and support, and to be thankful for people like Lacey, Tim, and Ari. If you want to know more about my sister-in-law’s story, she has a wonderfully written blog that is worth reading: You Might Get Lost.
