I love everything about working with newborns. I love the trust that parents place in me as they hand over their little one, only a few days new. I love the dark studio and quiet hum of the noise machine. I love shushing them to sleep, patting their little heads, and working to get their teeny tiny newborn fingers perfectly in place before taking a photo.
And this particular newborn session was especially awesome because I’ve worked with this family several times before. I first met them at an off-roading trailhead north of Boulder where I left my not-so-off-road-capable-car and hopped into their SUV. We slowly drove upwards, their 4 year old son in the back, giggling through every dip and bump in the road. Our destination: A crystal clear lake with mountain backdrops for their first family photography session.
I was delighted when Sarah emailed me, saying she was due with a little girl in a few months, and asking if I would take some maternity and newborn photos to help capture this exciting time in their lives. We did her maternity shoot in downtown Denver, making it more of a fun family session than the usual sentimental, soft, baby-belly photos. She wanted to capture some special moments between her and her son, since there was a limited amount of time left before he was no longer the only child. She also requested cool textures and bright pops of color, so we shot in front of some of my favorite walls and urban backdrops.
Since I know Sarah loves color and texture, I tried to work both into her little girl’s newborn session – bright yellow, a pop of coral, and lots of texture with fur and blankets and a twiggy bowl. Violet’s rosy cheeks, her dark hair, her pouty lips, and her precious newborn softness and newness made this such a fun session for me to photograph.
I can’t wait to photograph Big Brother holding his little sister soon – and here’s hoping I get to be a part of this sweet family’s life for years to come!

You’re so incredibly fun to work with; you’ve captured some of the best moments in our family’s life in a way that’s beautiful, unique and totally unscripted. We love the beautiful, thoughtful work you do but the real treat is working with someone who is as genuine and fun as you! Thank you!
This is the sweetest note I’ve ever gotten – thank you, Sarah! I just adore you and your family and look forward to being a part of documenting your lives for years to come. xoxo
